How I Schedule My Trading Overseas

Summer is just around the corner, and I’m getting ready for a big introduction! Before you get too excited, it’s nothing to do with trading. It’s just about family in this case.

Most of my family still lives overseas in Europe, spread across Italy, France, and Switzerland. I even have some family in Canada, but over here in the United States, there is hardly anyone outside of my immediate family.

So needless to say, I’m pretty excited about my daughter Aurelia’s debut to the family this summer…

I Talk About “Time” All the Time

My son Gaetano, who was born first, already got to meet the family back in summer 2023. He was eleven months old at the time and certainly had no problem flattering the family over in Italy.

When I say “Italy,” I don’t want you to think of Rome, Venice, or Florence. We are very far removed from any of the tourist attractions in the country, and to be honest, I like it that way. I have relationships with the locals and have known them my whole life. I want that relationship to continue with my children as well.

But now it’s my daughter’s turn to meet the overseas network. She started walking sooner than my son, and is going to be around eighteen months old for her debut. It’s going to be an entirely different experience because A) she’s older than my son was back in 2023, and B) in typical younger sibling fashion, she tries to keep up with everything her brother does and runs around everywhere following him.

Fortunately, my parents will be around to help out during our stay, because there’s no way I would be able to stay away from markets the entire time.

One of my favorite things about being in Europe is being six hours ahead of the U.S. market. I’m able to wake up with some extra peace in the morning, knowing that I don’t have to be at my trading desk in a few hours.

Does that stop me from checking the market entirely? Of course not. But a lot of the overnight action in futures is noise. So, I’m able to go about my day until lunch time.

I’m even able to take that (in)famous southern European siesta in the afternoon. I could never do that here in the states, but after a monstrous lunch and the afternoon heat, it’s actually very satisfying to lay down for a bit after lunch.

The cost, of course, is that I have to stay up later at night for the market close, because you know I’m all about those closing prices.

But honestly, I think it’s a small price to pay for even more freedom throughout the day, and that’s why I ever got into this trading business to begin with - freedom.
