Stocks are currently experiencing their longest pullback since July.
Last week delivered a bruising session for the bulls. A late-day rally on Friday provided some relief, but without it, the damage would have been far more severe.
The rotations I observed last week send a clear signal. Investors are showing a genuine appetite for value right now.
The question is whether bulls can tolerate this shift in leadership, or if bears will finally seize control of the tape.
The contrast with last week is striking. Seven days ago, technology dominated every timeframe on the sector scoreboard. Now energy has claimed both the 1-week and 30-day leadership positions. The speed and magnitude of this rotation demands attention.
From a valuation perspective, energy trades at the steepest discount of any major sector. The stocks are cheap by almost any measure. However, the underlying commodity tells a different story. Crude oil prices remain weak and uninspiring. The fundamental driver simply isn't there yet.
The weakness in crude stems from supply-side dynamics. "Drill baby drill" is currently overpowering "print baby print." This policy emphasis on production over monetary stimulus keeps a lid on energy prices for now.
Energy will eventually have its day. The valuations are too compelling to ignore indefinitely. But this sector alone cannot carry the broader market higher. The math doesn't work. Without participation from larger sectors, any energy-led rally will struggle to sustain upward momentum in the major indices.
This means technology's response in the coming sessions becomes critical. Last week's deleveraging in tech stocks created the vacuum that energy briefly filled. Watch closely to see whether tech can reclaim its leadership role, or if this value rotation has more room to run.
The market is testing a new dynamic. Bulls need to demonstrate they can handle sector rotation without breaking the overall uptrend. Bears are watching to see if this shift represents the beginning of something more significant.
Talk soon,
